Honoring Service During National Military Appreciation Month

Each May, Americans observe National Military Appreciation Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the service, sacrifice, and resilience of the men and women who have served—or continue to serve—in the United States Armed Forces.

Established by Congress in 1999, National Military Appreciation Month includes several important observances, including Loyalty Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day. Together, these commemorations offer an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of service members, veterans, military families, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation.

More Than a Month of Recognition

Military service often requires extraordinary personal sacrifice. Service members may spend months or years away from loved ones, relocate frequently, and face the physical and emotional demands of military life. Their families also share in these sacrifices, navigating deployments, career disruptions, and the challenges of constant transition.

National Military Appreciation Month is not only about ceremonial recognition—it is also a reminder of the importance of supporting military-connected individuals year-round. This support can take many forms, including access to healthcare, employment opportunities, education benefits, mental health services, and stable housing.

Supporting Veterans Beyond Service

For many veterans, the transition from military to civilian life can be rewarding but also difficult. Challenges such as securing employment, adjusting to civilian routines, addressing service-related disabilities, or finding affordable housing can create barriers to long-term stability.

One important resource available to veterans experiencing homelessness or housing instability is the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. HUD-VASH combines Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with case management and clinical services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This partnership helps eligible veterans access affordable housing while also receiving support services such as healthcare coordination, mental health treatment, substance abuse counseling, and assistance with daily living needs. Petra Community Housing has partnered with the VA of Coatesville and set aside six apartments at SteelTown Village for the VASH program. In addition to our seven current STV residents who are veterans, our other properties house a number of veterans that we honor as well.

Affordable housing organizations, community groups, and local agencies play a critical role in helping veterans access safe, stable homes and supportive services. Housing stability can serve as a foundation for improved health, employment, and community engagement.

Ways Communities Can Show Appreciation

Communities can honor military members and veterans in meaningful ways throughout May and beyond:

  • Attend or organize local military appreciation events
  • Support veteran-serving nonprofits and housing programs
  • Hire veterans and recognize military experience in the workplace
  • Volunteer with organizations serving military families
  • Reach out to veterans in your community to express gratitude and connection

Simple acts of recognition can have lasting impact. A note of thanks, participation in a community event, or contribution to a veteran support initiative can help communicate appreciation in tangible ways.

A Time to Reflect and Act

National Military Appreciation Month invites us to look beyond symbolic gestures and consider how to better support those who have served. While words of gratitude matter, meaningful appreciation also includes ensuring veterans and military families have access to the resources needed to thrive.

This May, let us honor the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of America’s military community—not only through remembrance, but through action.

“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude.” — President Harry S. Truman
